What should I do if I smell natural gas?

A fireplace caused a house fire that damaged their dining room.

Gas explosions are more common than people realize, which means you need to know what to do when you smell natural gas. First, check your stove to make sure the burners are turned off. Avoid turning any lights on because that can create a spark. Open as many doors and windows as you can to get fresh air flowing through your space. After these precautions are taken, get out of the house and call your gas company. They will come out to inspect your meter for leaks and repair any breaks. If the situation is dangerous, call 911 as soon as you leave your home.
